HOME GEMS Guatemala Missions Trip 2012

Guatemala Trip - February 2012

I went with a team of men from Canada and the US to work at FeViva World Missions centre In Chiquimulilla, Guatemala. We went to work on the infrastructure at the base and to assist in the community building cement pads for more efficient wood burning stoves. We also repaired some roofs in the community and fabricated some recreational facilities for the kids in the Casa Esperanza orphanage. After a week of building we went up to a retreat at the high place at Lake Atitlan. We were joined by a dozen Guatemalan pastors and worship leaders from the El Shaddai churches.  Three days later we went to Villa Nueva, which is close to Guatemala City for a thousand man conference (actually 1,200 men, including 400 pastors).img_1079

God allowed us to minister on ten different occasions as well as co-lead the daily devotions and worship sessions. We ministered in several Guatemalan churches, a Korean church, did a radio program, and spoke at both the retreat and the larger conference.

The theme for the conference came from a revelation that Jeanne had concerning a spirit of insignificance. We (Chang Su Yoo from Korea and me) were able to speak into the destiny of not only the men present but also to the nation of Guatemala itself.  We used the Toxic Memory Seminar to bring this message and emphasized the need to change our thoughts about ourselves and God to enable us to accomplish this.

That word is significant for all of us. You are special. You were designed to impact your realm of authority with the love and compassion of Jesus.  God is not limited in His capacity in using every situation, both good and bad, to bring His intended ends to pass. If we know that we are totally forgiven and wonderfully loved, then we will not panic when circumstances turn against us. Why? because we are in the hands of a loving heavenly father who controls every aspect of our life. He has not put us into a greenhouse but has allowed us to live along side of people who have no hope that our lives will stand out in contrast to theirs, which will allow them to see the Kingdom in action.

God has not forgotten you nor abandon you. He is using the circumstances of your life to bring you to your destiny and at the same time to display His awesome loving power to a lost and dying world. Joseph is the perfect example of this . His life was turned upside down but God never left him (see Gen 39:21).

Joseph was betrayed and sold into slavery by his envious brothers. He was locked into a life of slavery that brought hopelessness and agony into his soul. The bible says that God … sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold as a servant. His feet they hurt with fetters; he was laid in chains of iron and his soul entered into the iron, Until his word [to his cruel brothers] came true, until the word of the Lord tried and tested him (Ps 105:17-19 AMP).

I don’t think that Joseph felt like God was with him when he stood naked on the slave block or when he was tossed into prison accused of rape. He likely gave up all hope of man helping him when the butler that he prophesied over forgot him for two years (see Gen 40:23-Gen 41:1). In all likelihood he would have felt insignificant and lost; but he wasn’t. God was preparing him to reign. It was in the furnace of affliction that Joseph became the man that could rule without personal agendas. To all intense and purposes it looked like his brothers were the perpetrators of this evil deed but Joseph declares three times that God sent him not his brothers. (see Gen 45:5-8). God will even take the evil that others do to you and use it for your glory.

God is looking to promote you but He won’t if that promotion will destroy you. He loves you too much to take you out of the oven (see Deut 4:20) before you are done. He wants to show you off and put His glory on you. Jesus prayed that. He said, “… the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one (John 17:22 NKJV).  To the world we may be nothing but to God we are the very image of His Son and that will make us significant. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory (Col 3:2-4 NKJV.) Now that will be a significant day.
